Bai Juyi actively engaged in political reform in his early years, cared about people's livelihood, advocated the new Yuefu movement, and advocated that poetry creation should be based on real events and reflect the situation of the times. The so-called "articles are written in time, songs and poems are written in things" is one of the important leading figures in practical literature after Du Fu.
Bai Juyi is as famous as Yuan Zhen, nicknamed "Bai Yuan". Bai Yuan, two collaborators in the literary innovation movement, wrote "Changqing Collection of Yuan County" and "Bai Changqing Collection" respectively, which are called Changqing Style and Yuanhe Style in history. In his later years, Bai Juyi and Liu Yuxi, known as "Bai Liu", sang many songs.

Bai Juyi once divided his poems into four categories: allegory, leisure, sentimentality and miscellaneous methods, and he paid special attention to two types of poems:
One is a satirical poem as a tool of "helping others to abuse", and the other is a leisurely poem reflecting one's mentality of "being alone". And put forward the idea that "articles are written for the time, and poems are written for things". Bai Juyi and Yuan Zhen's essays enjoyed a high reputation in the Tang and Five Dynasties, when their literary reputation was still above that of Han Yu.
Bai Juyi and Yuan Zhen are good friends, and they have a similar understanding of the function of poetry, so they became comrades-in-arms of the New Yuefu Movement. At the same time, the two can compete in poetry, so they often take singing as a play. Bai Juyi once used Cao Cao to praise Liu Bei's "heroes in the world, only the ears of the monarch and the minister" to describe their friendship. Bai Juyi often lived in Luoyang in his later years and often sang with Liu Yuxi.
