Guandi Belief in Quanzhou Guandi Temple

In ancient Quanzhou, when a great plague occurred, the statue of Emperor Guan would be carried out for a tour. The most recent one was held in the 32nd year of the Republic of China (1943). At that time, the plague was prevalent, and the board of directors of the Guanyue Temple in Tonghuai, Quanzhou organized Emperor Guan to go on a tour. Emperor Guan sat in a sixteen-carat sedan chair, followed by the second emperor Yue Fei in an eight-carat sedan chair. Along the way, people knelt down to greet and pray, and rushed to pay to replace the bearers (it is popular belief that carrying the palanquin can avoid disasters). There were huge crowds of people, and households along the way set up incense tables to greet them, and the sound of firecrackers was deafening.

After 1949, most Guandi temples were closed or collapsed, or were used for other purposes, but Guandi belief did not disappear. Folks believe that Emperor Guan has the functions of commanding orders, blessing imperial examinations, curing diseases and eliminating disasters, exorcising evil and avoiding evil, patrolling the underworld, and attracting wealth. Therefore, all walks of life believe in him. Many people put the statue of Guandi at home to worship, or burn incense and kowtow at the entrance of the Guandi temple. This was true even during the "Cultural Revolution". The Tonghuai Guandi Temple in Quanzhou was converted into a factory during the "Cultural Revolution" and the statues were destroyed, but believers still gathered in groups in the open space in front of the temple to kowtow and pray; or Go quietly to worship in the evening. During festivals, there are huge crowds of people in front of the temple. When people make sworn brothers, they go to the Guandi Temple to exchange for a golden orchid tree, vowing to imitate Liu, Guan, and Zhang in "Taoyuan sworn friendship" and never change their hearts. Those who do business regard Emperor Guan as the God of Wealth, and hope that loyalty will be the most important thing for each other, and harmony will bring wealth. In addition to worshiping Mazu, people sailing on the sea often worship Guandi on board. When you are sick, you have to go to Guandi Temple for divination and draw lots, and even pray for rain and ask Guandi for help.
