American poetry anacdote of the jar

Anecdote of the Jar

by Wallace Stevens

I placed a jar in Tennessee, I A jar was placed in Tennessee

And round it was, upon a hill. The round jar stood on the top of a hill.

It made the slovenly wilderness

Surround that hill.

The wilderness rose up to it, The wilderness rose up to it, It surged away

And sprawled around, no longer wild. And spread around, no longer wild.

The jar was round upon the ground The round jar stood on the ground

And tall and of a port in air. Tall as a port in the air

It took dominion everywhere.

The jar was gray and bare. This bare gray jar

It did not give of bird or bush, it could not grow birds and bushes

Like nothing else in Tennessee. Unlike other places in Tennessee
