Ancient poetry in a narrow sense is a poetic style relative to modern poetry. There are mainly genres such as "Song", "Xing" and "Yin". According to the number of words in each poem, it is divided into four-character poems, five-character poems, seven-character poems and miscellaneous poems.
From the Southern and Northern Dynasties, poets pursued the beauty of metrical poems, and in the Tang Dynasty, "metrical poems" and "quatrains" appeared. At that time, for the sake of distinction, people referred to the previous poems and poems written according to the previous poetic style as ancient poems, or "ancient styles", and called the new metrical poems "modern poems".
