Baidu Encyclopedia:
The Book of Songs is my country's first collection of poetry, which collects 305 poems from the early Western Zhou Dynasty to the middle of the Spring and Autumn Period over 500 years. In the pre-Qin Dynasty, the "Book of Songs" was called "Poetry", or the whole number was called "Poetry Three Hundred" or "Three Hundred Chapters". It was revered as a Confucian classic during the Western Han Dynasty and was called the Book of Songs and is still in use today. The Book of Songs was written around the Spring and Autumn Period. In the Han Dynasty, there were four families who taught the Book of Songs: Qi (Shen Pei), Lu (Mao Heng), Han (Han Ying), and Mao (Zhao Ren Mao Chang). After the Eastern Han Dynasty, the three families of Qi, Lu, and Han died one after another, and only "Mao Shi Wai Zhuan" remains. Mao's poetry became popular after the Eastern Han Dynasty and has been passed down to this day.
Important annotations include "Mao Shi Zhengyi", Song Zhu Xi's "Collected Poems", Qing Ma Ruichen's "Mao Shi Biography", Qing Chen Huan's "Poems and Mao's Biography", The modern person Cheng Junying's "Commentary on the Book of Songs", the modern person Yu Guanying's "Selected Translation of the Book of Songs", the modern person Zhao Que's "The Book of Songs We Read Wrongly in Those Years", etc.
It is said that there were as many as 3,000 poems handed down during the Spring and Autumn Period, but later only 311 were left (including six Sheng poems: Nanmei, Baihua, Huashui, You) Geng, Chongqiu, Youyi), later for convenience, it was called "Three Hundred Poems". Among the disciples of Confucius, Zixia had the strongest understanding of poetry, so he passed on the poetry. By the early Han Dynasty, the poets included Shen Peigong from Lu, Yuan Gusheng from Qi, and Han Ying from Yan, collectively known as the Three Poems. Qi poetry died in the Wei Dynasty, Lu poetry died in the Western Jin Dynasty, and Han poetry was still alive in the Tang Dynasty, but now there are only 10 volumes of Gaiden left in the world. As for the Book of Songs circulating in the world today, they are Mao's poems passed down by Mao Gong (Da Mao Gong: Mao Heng, Xiao Mao Gong: Mao Chang).
