During the nearly 20 years from the post-war to the early 1960s, left-wing literature flourished and a number of outstanding writers and works emerged. For example, Frank Hardy (19 17~), whose novel The Power of Inconvenience (1950) attacked the darkness of society; Allen marshall (1902~) is good at depicting children's psychology and is famous for his autobiographical novel I can jump over a puddle (1955). John morrison (1904~), a worker writer, mainly reflects workers' lives, and has a collection of short stories and a novel "The Spread of the City" (1949).
In 1930s and 1940s, there were some arguments about literary schools and literary views in Australian literary circles. In the early 1930s, the "Phantom School" poets related to Norman Lindsay opposed the narrow nationalist tendency in literature and art. They consciously sought a form of expression to replace the popular "jungle ballads" and pursued formal beauty excessively in their poetry creation. The representative poets are Kenneth Slessor (1901~1917) and Robert Fitzgerald (1902~). Rex Gimel (19 13~ 1955) initiated the "Zindivo roebuck Movement". "Zindivo roebuck" means "merger" and "integration" in the local language. Gimel in Britain believes that only when writers and artists are integrated with Australia can they really create beautiful works. Some people think that writers and poets should draw nutrition from the arts, poems and legends of indigenous people. This movement is the first time that they put forward the slogan of national literature from a new angle, and it is also the first time that they have drawn people's attention to local culture. In the early 1940s, Max Harris (192 1~) founded the poetry publication Angry Penguin, which advocated avant-garde poetry, that is, imitating surreal expression techniques of Britain and America in poetry creation.
At the same time, stream-of-consciousness novels began to be introduced into Australia. Patrick white (19 12~) deliberately used the stream of consciousness technique in his novel creation and made outstanding achievements. Tree of Man (1955) and Eye of the Storm (1973) are all his successful works. His novels pay attention to the inner world of the characters and are also original in the use of language. Therefore, White won the Nobel Prize in Literature with 1973, becoming the first Australian writer to win this honor. Other famous writers are Christina Steed (1902~) and the author of Seven Poor People in Sydney (1934). Hal Porter (19 1 1~) has a unique style and creative writing. Besides short stories, his poetry creation is also outstanding. Randolph Stowe's novels (1935~) are close to white in writing, but most of them are about life in the west. Thomas Keneally (1935~) is a prolific writer with 14 novels and 3 plays. Christopher Kaush (1932~) is regarded as an excellent writer in recent years. Although his works are few, his style is fresh.
The most famous poets are Alec derwent Hope (1907~), Judith Wright (19 15~) and david campbell (1915 ~1977 ~).
Australian drama has developed rapidly since the 1950s. The most important playwrights are Alexander Buzuo (1944~), david williamson (1942~), Jack hibbert (1940~) and Barry oakley (1938 ~).
