Ba Jin (November 25, 1904 - October 17, 2005), formerly known as Li Yaotang and courtesy name Fu Gan, was a native of Chengdu, Sichuan, China, and his ancestral home was Jiaxing, Zhejiang. The pseudonym "Ba Jin" comes from a classmate named Ba Enbo (some say he is the founder of anarchism Bakunin) whom he met while studying in France, and this Kropotkin's works that Ba Jin translated when his classmate committed suicide. He took one word from each of the two people's names and became his pen names. Asteroid 8315 is named after him.

In his later years, Ba Jin proposed to establish a museum of modern Chinese literature and a museum of the Cultural Revolution, but the latter wish was not realized until his death. Ba Jin was considered to represent the conscience of mainland Chinese intellectuals, and for this reason he was inhumanely persecuted by the Gang of Four during the Cultural Revolution. Ba Jin suffered from Parkinson's disease, chronic bronchitis, hypertension, malignant mesothelioma and other diseases in his later years. It is reported that he once expressed his request for euthanasia, but the government refused and blocked the information due to political reasons. Ba Jin passed away at 19:6 on October 17, 2005 in Shanghai Huadong Hospital at the age of 101.
