The Italian medieval "Sicilian School" poet Jacopo da Lentini was the first literati to use this poetic form and give it a strict meter. It consists of two parts, the former part is two stanzas of four lines, the latter part is two stanzas of three lines, and the last part is fourteen lines. Each line of verse is usually 11 syllables, iambic. The rhyme pattern at the end of each line is ABAB, ABAB, CDE, CDE.
