Brief introduction of Zhongyue Temple in Songshan Mountain

Zhongyue Temple, located at the foot of Huanggaifeng at the eastern foot of Songshan Mountain in Dengfeng City, Henan Province, is the main temple of Songshan Temple Group. Formerly known as Taishi Temple, it was built in the Qin Dynasty.

Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty boarded Songshan Mountain and ordered the construction of temples. It was renamed in the Northern Wei Dynasty. It was expanded many times during the Tang and Song Dynasties. In the seventeenth year of Chongzhen in Ming Dynasty (1644), it was destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt during the reign of Qing Qianlong. The existing temple system basically retains the scale after reconstruction in the Qing Dynasty.

The temple is built on the mountain and rises step by step from south to north. The temple is 650m long from north to south and166m wide from east to west, covering an area of110000m2. There are eleven buildings on the central axis, namely Zhonghua Gate, Medicine Cange, Tianzhongge, Peitianzuo Town Square, Chongshengmen, Huamanmen, Junjimen, Gaosongjunjifang, Zhongyue Hall, Bedroom and Imperial Book Building. On the east and west roads of the temple, there are also small courtyards such as Taiwei Palace, Vulcan Palace, Zushi Palace, Xiao Lou Palace, Shenzhou Palace and Wanglong Palace.

The main hall of Zhongyue Hall is Zhongyue Hall, also called Jijun Hall. Nine halls are wide and five halls are deep, covering an area of 1 1,000 square meters. It is the largest hall in the whole temple and the largest building in Songshan. The hall is a double-eaved, roof-type building, covered with yellow glazed tiles, and the rafters, cornices, arches and beams are all painted with the most distinguished seal colors of the Qing Dynasty. There is a 5-meter-high statue of the "Heavenly King" (that is, Emperor Zhongyue) in the shrine, with courtiers and town hall generals on both sides.

On the east side of Junjimen Gate in Zhongyue Temple, there is a monument to Gaoling Temple in Song Zhongyue. The inscription was written by Kou, a Taoist priest of Songshan Mountain in the Northern Wei Dynasty, and was engraved in the second year of Tai 'an in the Northern Wei Dynasty (456). It is the oldest stone tablet in Songshan Mountain. There are many cultural relics in Zhongyue Temple, such as bronze wares, Iron Man in Song Dynasty, Zhongyue Temple Monument in Jin Dynasty, Iron Lion in Jin Dynasty and wuyue Monument in Ming Dynasty. The temple has been listed as a national key cultural relics protection unit.

Zhongyue Temple has two traditional temple fairs in March and October of the lunar calendar every year.

Zhongyue Temple is now a national key Taoist temple and the seat of Henan Taoist Association.
