Lin Tonghua's research field

Lin Tonghua has been engaged in aviation engineering, engineering mechanics, inelastic structures and metal fatigue all his life. After receiving his Ph.D. from Mersey University in Detroit, USA, he devoted himself to the study of mechanical theory and wrote his masterpiece Inelastic Structure Theory. He also published hundreds of papers on structural analysis, plastic mechanics and fatigue mechanics.

Lin Tonghua has also made remarkable achievements in scientific and technological research, including: Micro-Plasticity Mechanics (1954- 1978) sponsored by American scientific research institutions and the National Science Foundation of the United States, and materials damage and thermal load caused by circulating machinery sponsored by American Air Force scientific research institutions. Lin Tonghua was awarded the highest prize for engineer by the National Academy of Engineering, and served as a senior engineer and consultant of the US Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the host of metal fatigue research in scientific research institutions of the US Air Force. 1988 was awarded the "TheodorevonKar-manT Award" by the American Society of Civil Engineers (only one award is selected worldwide every year). 1990 was elected as an academician of American Society of Civil Engineering (1990), American National Society of Engineering (1990) and China Academy of Sciences (1996) for his extraordinary contribution to inelastic structural analysis. In the Brief History of Southwest Jiaotong University, it is also written that "the discipline of civil engineering of Southwest Jiaotong University/kloc-has trained a large number of famous scholars and engineering authorities at home and abroad like Mao Yisheng, Zhu Kezhen, Lin Tongyan and Lin Tonghua for more than 0/00 years ..." Comparing Lin Tonghua with Mao Yisheng, Zhu Kezhen and other masters, we can see his outstanding contributions in civil engineering.

For this reason, Lin Tonghua won the Theodore von Kármán Medal, the highest honor award of the American Civil Engineering Society, and was elected as an academician of the American Academy of Engineering and a foreign academician of the China Academy of Sciences. He and Professor Berkeley, academician of American Academy of Sciences and foreign academician of China Academy of Sciences (graduated from Tangshan Jiaotong University 193 1 class) who died several years ago are cousins.
