Between Struggle and Wandering —— On Mu Dan's Myself 20 18-05- 10

Author Jia

Mu Dan is a special existence in the history of modern literature. He was born in Plutocratic family, but the wealth of his family is a distant thing to him. Compared with Xu Zhimo, a distant relative who is also a poet, Mu Dan is more like Fu, while Xu Zhimo is more like Li Bai. Xu Zhimo does not shy away from his talent. His talent is like a waterfall, while Mu Dan is more like a stream. Although Xu Zhimo admired Hamilton's knowledge before, he later found that literature was his greatest talent. But Mu Dan is different. When he was in the National Southwest Associated University, Mu Dan was already a new star in the school poetry circle in Ran Ran. But as soon as the war reached Yunnan, he immediately joined the army, became a lieutenant colonel translator in the army, and then participated in the Yunnan-Myanmar retreat. The retreat between Yunnan and Burma is as difficult as the Long March. Mu Dan hasn't even eaten a complete meal for eight days, so there is a sense of sadness in his poems.

The poem Myself was written three years before Mu Dan's death. This poem has no concrete image, but it conforms to the struggle of most of us all our lives. Most of us may not live like Xu Zhimo and know what we can do, what we can do and what we want to do. Most of us live more like Mu Dan, and the choices we make are deeply influenced by the environment. As soon as the bonfire of war came, Mu Dan entered the military camp under the call of 100,000 young people and 100,000 troops. 1947, Mu Dan went to the United States to study and work in the United Nations. But seeing that most of the intellectuals around him returned to China and their love for the new country, Mu Dan returned to China and studied the popular Russian literature at that time. He is still a famous translator. As soon as the political movement came, Mu Dan was deprived of his glory and became a worker in the bath hall. When a spring breeze was just blowing in the political and historical sky, Mu Dan was finally able to pick up a pen and re-create. Physical pain limited him, and even Mu Dan did not persist until the year of his innocence.

The last sentence of every paragraph in the poem Myself is "I don't know if it's myself". Just like Mu Dan's life, most of it was pushed forward by the times. Mu Dan has a poet in his heart, which is what he wants most, but it is the most difficult to achieve in that stormy era.
