Day 10: Interpretation of "Jue" in Ancient Poetry

In Bai Juyi's Song of Eternal Sorrow, there is a sentence that says of Yang Guifei: "Her cloud-colored bun hung aside in a hurry, and when she came along the platform, her flower hat was loose." According to the understanding of modern China people, it is clearly our imperial concubine who has messy hair and just went to bed. How can she come to class disheveled at once? Is Yang Guifei sleepwalking? By analyzing the photos of the word "Jue" when I was a child, I can see if I can find the answer. The scene in the photo is a room with two hands playing with some sticks, indicating that people in the room are studying, just like the photo of the word "learning" when I was a child. There was a man standing in the room, with only one open eye painted on his head. This should mean that learning can open people's blinded eyes, reach a state of awakening and consciousness, and then extend to awakening. Therefore, I can be sure that the word "sleep" should mean waking up. In this way, let's re-understand Bai Juyi's poem, that is, the noble lady who just woke up and her hair was half cocked, and it makes sense to come to class unkempt.

Monosyllabic words are the main vocabulary in China's ancient poems, which means that a word is a word in many cases, which is different from disyllabic words in modern Chinese. So "sleep" here means waking up after a sleep, not going to sleep.

We have all heard the story of three visits to the cottage. Do you remember what Zhuge Liang was doing when Liu Bei visited Zhuge Liang for the third time? I'm sleeping, or rather taking a nap. Do you remember what Zhuge Liang said when he woke up? He said, "I will know who dreams first all my life." The thatched cottage is full of sleep in spring, and the sun is late outside the window. " This is the meaning of waking up with the word "sleep".

Today we know that there is a difference between light sleep and deep sleep. The ancients in China called shallow sleep "sleep" with drooping eyelids; A deep sleep is called "sleep", so Meng Haoran said in "Spring Dawn" that "I woke up briskly this morning in spring". He is sleepy in spring and lacking in autumn. He sleeps in the spring morning and wakes up naturally. When he woke up, the sun was shining on his ass, and he didn't know it. But Mr. Kongming just took a nap, so he said that Caotang had enough sleep in spring, not "Caotang had enough sleep in spring", because it was a nap. If it was "enough sleep in spring", it is estimated that Liu Bei would have to stand late in the morning the next day.
