Beowulf is the highest literary achievement in Old English. Old English is characterized by the good use of metaphorical compounds, such as calling the sea "Whale Road". This is the case in long poems, where "soldiers" are called by terms such as "shields", "war heroes" and "spearmen". Poets often use different adjectives to describe the same thing and phenomenon repeatedly. King Lozgar is called "King of Denmark, wise ruler, kind father, thinking of giving rewards". The second is alliteration, also called alliteration. Alliteration means that all rhyming words start with the same consonant.
