Midnight Wu Song·Autumn Song

The moon is shining in Chang'an, and the sound of thousands of households pounding clothes is heard.

The autumn wind never blows away, but there is always love.

On what day when the barbarians are defeated, a good man will stop his expedition.

Famous line "The autumn wind cannot blow away, but the love between the jade and the love is always there."

Appreciation of the work:

The whole poem is about the concubine's wife's nostalgia for the expedition on the border in the autumn night. My beloved, I hope that the war will end soon and my husband will not have to leave home to go on an expedition. Although it does not write about love directly, every word is permeated with sincere affection; although it does not talk about the current situation, it does not stray away from the current situation. The sentiment and interest are not divorced from the charm of frontier poems.

The capital city under the silvery moon is peaceful on the surface, but the sound of pounding clothes contains the pain of thousands of families; the constant autumn wind also expresses the deep affection for missing the border gate. It's heart-pounding to read. The concluding sentence is the wife's expectation and Zhengren's heartfelt voice.

Generally speaking, the poet's technique is to use scene language first and then love language, and the scenes are always blended. "A piece of moon in Chang'an" describes the scenery, and at the same time it closely follows the title, describing the seasonal characteristics of "the moon shines brightly in autumn". Seeing the moon and cherishing people is a traditional expression method in classical poetry. In addition, autumn is the season of rushing to make clothes and collect clothes, so writing about the moon also has arousing significance. In addition, the moon is as bright as day, which is just the right time to pound the clothes, and the moonlight that "cannot be rolled up in the jade curtain, but comes back after being brushed on the anvil of the clothes" can easily arouse the lovesickness of the missing woman. The cloth used for making clothes must first be placed on an anvil and pounded flat and soft with a pestle. This is called "clothing pounding". On this bright moonlit night, the city of Chang'an was immersed in the sound of anvils and pestles, and this special "autumn sound" was an unbearable provocation to the missing woman. "One piece" and "ten thousand households" are written in light and voice, which seems to be right but not right, and the words are natural and have a chanting feel. Autumn wind also makes people feel melancholy. "The autumn wind blows into the window and the tents flutter", which is the third provocation to the missing woman. The moon is bright and the wind is clear, and the wind blows the anvil, and the sound is the deep feeling of remembering the people in Yuguan. Use the word "always" to express profound feelings and thoughts. Here, the autumn moon, autumn sounds and autumn wind weave into a seamless realm. There are no people in the scenery, but the characters seem to be really there, and the "Jade Pass Love" is also very strong. Wang Euzhi commented: "The first four sentences are good sentences born in heaven and earth, which were picked up by Taibai." ("Selection of Tang Poems") This feeling is so strong that it cannot be stopped, so the last two sentences directly express the thoughts of missing his wife: "When will Hu Ping Hu be killed?" "Is the good man ready to go on an expedition?" Some people in later generations preferred "implicitness". For example, Tian Tongzhi once said: "I deleted the last two sentences to make a quatrain, which makes it more ambiguous." ("Xipu Poems") 》) In fact, this may not be the case. "I don't know the beauty of the ballads, but the momentum of the songs is heartfelt" ("Dazi Night Song"). It is generous and natural, which is the true nature of folk songs. There is no need to deliberately use such hesitant terms. From the content point of view, it is just like Shen Deqian. "Midnight Wu Ge·Autumn Song" Original Text and Appreciation 2

Appreciation

The whole poem is about the wife of a conquering husband who misses her beloved husband on an expedition to the frontier in autumn night, hoping that the war will end soon and her husband will not have to leave home to go on an expedition.

The four sentences in the opening chapter blend the scenes and become natural. They were praised by Wang Euzhi as "good sentences are born in the sky" ("Selection of Tang Poems"). On a cool autumn night, the moon is shining brightly, the anvil is sounding, and the cold wind is blowing. It is really a wonderful picture full of autumn.

However, "all scenery language is a language of love" (Wang Guowei's "Human Words"). The first three sentences are divided into autumn moon, autumn sound and autumn wind. From vision to hearing to touch, they all contribute to the "emotion" of the fourth sentence. Foreshadowing: moonlight is the medium that triggers lovesickness; the sound of pounding clothes indicates that women are preparing to rush to make clothes for their relatives on the border (in ancient times, the cloth must be flattened and softened before tailoring), which itself contains Deep concern and longing; the autumn wind is the easiest to arouse people's emotions and melancholy.

For people who have suffered the pain of separation, it is unbearable to have these three together, let alone all of them gathered together? What's more, on a night with white moon and clear wind, the whole city of Chang'an can be heard. Che's heartbreaking sound of "thousands of households" smashing their clothes! At this moment, who can not be infected by this desolate and warm atmosphere? "It's always love", one sentence concludes, and it can't be resisted A critical moment.

The word "Yuguan" is named "Jade Pass" because of the love, which reminds people of the distant frontier and makes people realize the depth of the love. The sentence begins with "always", which combines what is seen in the eyes and what is heard in the first three sentences. Everything you hear and feel on your skin is completely included, trying to highlight that this emotion is filled between heaven and earth and is omnipresent. At this point in the poem, the whole atmosphere has been fully exaggerated. The author strokes his pen: "When will the Hulu be pacified and the good men stop the expedition?" Looking forward to the early end of the war and yearning for a peaceful and stable life are not only the poet's wish, but also the wife's wish. Voice. This stroke not only makes the theme of the whole poem more profound, but also makes the "Jade Pass love" stronger.

Creation background

This poem is the third in "Songs of the Four O'clock at Midnight". Li Bai created new words based on the old title of Yuefu. The specific creation time is unknown.

Poetry There is a moon in Chang'an, and the sound of thousands of households pounding their clothes. The autumn wind never blows away, but there is always the love of jade.

Source: "Midnight Wu Song: Autumn Song" by Li Bai of the Tang Dynasty.

Translation Note 1: Pounding clothes: The ancients pounded the fabrics flat before sewing. Meaning of the sentence: On a moonlit night in Chang'an City, I could only hear the sound of thousands of households pounding their clothes. What the autumn wind cannot blow away is the longing of the women in clothes who miss their husbands who are far away guarding Yumen Pass. It expresses the author's condemnation of the militarism of the ruling class

Volume 2 of "Jiang Zhai Poetry" by Fuzhi, the Qing Dynasty king: "The sentiment in the scene, such as 'A piece of moon in Chang'an', is naturally the feeling of being alone and recalling the distant past." Also "Selection of Tang Poems": "The first four sentences are good sentences generated in the sky and earth, and were picked up by Taibai." Qingtian Tongzhi's "Xipu Poems": "Li Taibai's "Midnight Wu Song", Yu Tie said that the last two sentences were deleted to make quatrains, I feel even more profound."

Translation Note 2

In the night sky of Chang'an, with the autumn moon hanging high, the sound of clothes being pounded could be heard in thousands of households. This was the missing woman rushing to make winter clothes for her husband who was on an expedition. situation. The blowing autumn wind cannot extinguish the Zheng's wife's longing for the garrison outside Yumen Pass. The word "always" is more profound, concisely expressing the endless sorrow of separation, and "a piece of moon" symbolizes the longing for reunion of the missing woman.

Midnight Wu Song·Autumn Song

[Tang Dynasty] Li Bai,

A moon in Chang'an, the sound of thousands of households pounding clothes .

The autumn wind never blows away, but there is always love.

Collection Commentary of the Qing Dynasty·Wang Fuzhi: "The first four sentences are good sentences that were born between heaven and earth and were picked up by Taibai." ("Selection of Tang Poems")

Qing Dynasty·Shen Deqian: "Poetry is a precious gift." Meaning, there is something here but the intention is somewhere else. Li Taibai's "Midnight Wu Song" is originally about the love of a boudoir, but suddenly he hopes to stop the war; "Jing Xia Pi Guo Qiao" is originally about the ovary, but the intention is to live in one's own home; "Yuan" "Farewell" was originally an ode to the Emperor of China, but it was used to blame Su Zong for his failure and Li Fuguo's monopoly on power. It is not settled yet, but the words are kind and gentle." (Volume 2 of "Collection of Tang Poems")

The general case "Midnight Wu Song" is a Yuefu folk song that expresses the love between men and women. It belongs to the "Wu Sheng Songs". According to legend, It was created by a woman named Ziye during the Jin Dynasty. The old title of Yuefu in the Six Dynasties was five characters and four sentences, and Li Bai added it to six sentences. There are four original poems, which are divided into four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. This poem is an autumn song, which is the third among them. The poem uses the "sound of banging clothes" in the autumn wind on a moonlit night to convey the young woman's incomparable longing for the soldiers in the distant garrison and her desire to end the war so that she can reunite with her relatives and restore a peaceful life. "When will the Hulu be defeated, the good man will stop his expedition?" I hope that the war will cease soon and the husband will return. This is a natural extension of the above and a deepening of the content and theme. This shows the poet's original ingenuity. The language of the poem is naturally refined, the style is clear and graceful, and it has a strong flavor of Yuefu folk songs.
