Wu Zetian's most famous poem is as follows:
Ruyi Niang
Wu Zetian [Tang Dynasty]
Looking at Zhu Chengbi, she is full of thoughts, haggard and divided. Remember you.
If you don’t believe it, I have been crying recently, so I opened the box to check out the pomegranate skirt.
Translation
I miss you so much that I lose my mind and see red as green in a daze; my body is haggard and my mind is in a trance, just because I miss you too much.
If you don’t believe that I have been crying because of missing you recently, then open the suitcase and look at the tear stains on my pomegranate skirt.
Creative background:
After the death of Emperor Taizong, Wu Zetian lived in Ganye Temple and became a nun. Emperor Gaozong Li Zhi saw her in the temple and summoned her back to the palace to worship Zhaoyi. While staying at Ganye Temple, Wu Zetian wrote her most famous poem "Ruyi Niang". According to historical records, this poem was written to Li Zhi, Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty.
The poem "Ruyi Niang" expresses the feeling of lovesickness and sorrow. The scale is full of twists and turns, integrating the Yuefu style of the Southern and Northern Dynasties into one, bright and implicit, gorgeous and fresh. It is Wu Zetian's masterpiece and has a certain influence on later generations. "Look at Zhu Chengbi" later became a commonly used idiom among people in the Tang and Song Dynasties.
