Eldritch's hometown, Leeds, England, was like a giant goth hatchery in the early 1980s, and Sisters of Mercy (abbreviated as S.O.M) was the source of heat for breaking the shell. This ancient city with a strong religious atmosphere, but which has been eroded by modern industry, is filled with dark clouds and flames in the hallucinations of many young people who are empty, irritable, and who imagine life as a vacuum. Eldritch dyed his hair black and set his sights on limiting his clothing to only one color in the years to come: black—shoes, hats, shirts, etc. When they released their first single, the funky, trashy but brilliant "Damage Done", the band was still known as "Doktor Avalnche". The incomplete musical style at that time came from the fact that Eldritch wanted to be a bowie-style glam rock band, but when he really immersed himself in the music, he found that there was a big gap between what he objectively made and what he subjectively aspired to.
