The French Architectural Relics of Xiashan European Style Street —— Zhanjiang Tourism New Landscape

1898, the French forcibly entered Zhanjiang and began to lease "Guangzhou Bay", that is, the urban area of Zhanjiang. After the outbreak of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the coastal ports of China successively fell, and the French Concession in Guangzhou Bay (now Zhanjiang City) was in a desperate situation, and foreign trade and economic development once flourished. 1943, the Japanese army occupied Zhanjiang. The French stayed in Zhanjiang for 45 years, leaving many French architectural relics in the urban area.

There are many western-style buildings left by the French along Xiashan Haibin Road, mainly including the French civil office building, Verdo Catholic Church, Gospel Hall, Credit Suisse Bank and so on. These buildings are all reinforced concrete houses, reflecting the popular architectural style in France at that time and full of rich cultural atmosphere.

Zhanjiang City has given necessary protection to these French-style buildings. Some buildings in France are listed as municipal cultural relics protection units, and some buildings are still in use and play a certain role. After Zhanjiang was selected as an excellent tourist city in China, these French-style buildings are gradually becoming new attractions for tourists to learn about Zhanjiang's history.
