The wild geese fly south under the Yangyue, and the rumor ends here. My journey has not ended yet. When will I come back? The river is still and the tide is beginning to fall, and the forest is full of miasma. In the Ming Dynasty, when you look at your hometown, you should see Longtou plum.
Note: Dageng Mountain: the name of the mountain in present-day Geng County, Jiangxi Province.
Yi: A place where officials from Chuanhe stayed.
Yang month: tenth month of the lunar calendar.
Miasma: refers to the pathogenic air in the mountains and forests in hot and humid weather.
Longtou Mei: Plum blossoms on Daqing’s Chaoshan Mountain.
Explanation: In October, swan geese fly south and turn back when they fly here. My journey is endless, when can I return? The tide recedes, the moon is quiet, and the miasma lingers in the dark mountains and forests. Tomorrow morning, I will climb high to look at my hometown and pick plum blossoms to send to my relatives.
Analysis: This poem was written when the author was exiled to Lingnan. Legend has it that Hongyan flew south to Dayuling and turned back, but the author was exiled this time. We have to continue traveling south, and there will be no sun when we return north. We cannot turn back here like flying geese do. Comparing humans and geese, humans are inferior to geese, which shows the author's inner misery. In front of the inn, the river has just reached the tide, and it is very quiet at this time; in the deep mountains and dense forests, the air of miasma is gathering. The place the author visited this time is an even harsher environment than what he has seen before. If he climbs up to the north tomorrow Looking at my hometown, even though it is October, I should still be able to see the plum blossoms in Longtou. The plum blossoms in Chang'an only bloom in late spring, and the plum blossoms here bloom in October. This shows that the author is worried about being relegated to Lingnan, a distant place. After Song Zhiwen was demoted, he had more feelings about life, and his poems therefore had more substantial content. Regardless of the lyrical description of the scene, this poem is inspired by emotion. It is not the face of his early poems that were precise, harmonious in rhyme, but pale in content.
