Time background
The novel was written in the 1950s of 19, which coincided with the rapid development of British capitalist economy. The development of capitalism and the evils brought by the poverty of working people led to the extreme resentment and dissatisfaction of the lower classes, and British society was on the verge of social revolution, which was very similar to the social situation in France at the end of 18. Dickens compared the two cities in order to provide reference for British society at that time.
Literary materials
According to what Dickens said in the preface, 1857, when Dickens performed Wilkie Collins's play Deep in the Ice Sea with his children and friends, he began to get the gist of the story. The hero of Deep in the Ice Sea is a young man who died while exploring the Arctic to save his rival after being abandoned by his beloved girl. Such characterization fully resonates with Dickens, and also fully conforms to Dickens' definition of a moral person: sacrificing oneself for others and being virtuous. This provided material for him to conceive the character Caton in A Tale of Two Cities. ?
