growing environment

Chen, pen name,,. 1917 was born in Leshan county, Sichuan province on September 2. Leshan was formerly known as Jiading House and Jia Shuai. It is a peninsular zone about 100 miles from Emei Mountain, surrounded by tributaries of the Yangtze River on three sides, and only one land route leads to Chengdu through several counties. The climate here is pleasant and the scenery is beautiful. Throughout the ages, many accomplished literati have been trained. Cen Can, a poet in the prosperous Tang Dynasty, and Guo Moruo, a modern writer, were both born here. Su Dongpo, a poet in the Song Dynasty, studied in Lingyun Mountain, where there is Dongpo West Wild Goose Lake, which has always been regarded as a scenic spot. Although her family is not rich, she has enough food and clothes. Grandfather was a scholar in the late Qing Dynasty. After the Revolution of 1911, he taught primary schools and actually learned new arithmetic. Chen was enlightened at the age of four, thanks to his grandfather. When she was a child, her grandfather often taught her to read, but it was just a "serious book." At first, I read Sheng Amethyst and Xiao Jing. Later, I read Historical Records Yao Jie, The Analects of Confucius, Tang Poetry and so on. Novels, old and new, are not allowed to read. Grandma is most opposed to reading because she can't read. She always said angrily, "Did you become a queen after reading it?" I have never studied in my life. "Grandfather very much hoped that his father could shine, and finally became a small official under the Sichuan warlords, running around all the year round and not at home. My mother is the daughter of a merchant family. She studies in a private school. After she got married, she worked hard to get into the county women's normal school. Because of grandma's strong opposition, she finally failed, which has been a pity. Therefore, she is very supportive of her daughter's study.

Juvenile period

When I was in the fourth grade of primary school, there was an elderly classmate in my class with a thick braid who often told you stories from old novels, such as Elvis Presley and Rebirth. There are such books among classmates, which are passed on to each other and take them into a novel world. Chen read something from these books that he couldn't read in textbooks, and felt particularly fresh. As a teenager, Chen found spiritual sustenance in a depressed and dreary environment.

Steal reading

Grandpa's study is very big, and the cabinets, bookshelves and tables are all thread-bound books eaten by bugs. Chen hopes to sit upright and explore the mystery of this book like her grandfather, but strict family rules keep her out and underage children are not allowed to enter the study. One winter night when I was twelve years old, the whole family was baking cages in the room. Chen seized the opportunity and quietly pushed open the door of the study. He took a copy of Strange Tales from a Lonely Studio from the bookshelf, took it back to his room and stuffed it under the mattress. Stay up late at night and sit under the oil lamp reading. She recalled in the essay "Stealing Reading" written by 1946: "What a surprise, what an ecstasy, what a horror! The stories of ghosts and foxes are really shocking! They all seemed to peek at me through the cracks in the window and under the door, as if they had entered the house and hid behind those crowded furniture. But this fear can't take away my interest in reading, so I hold my face with my hands, leaving only two eyes facing the book; I occasionally raise my eyes and look around, but I immediately withdraw my eyes in horror. "

From then on, she became more and more interested in reading, trying to avoid grandpa's eyes, looking in the study, and slowly found reflections, national history, and various novels. She also borrowed the list of gods and Journey to the West from her apprentice in her uncle's shop and read it greedily. My heart was still pounding when I started peeking. After watching for a while, everything around me seemed to disappear.
