What is Gothic Literature?

Gothic literature was very popular in Victorian era, and most of it was included in the ranks of horror literature and magic novels. Its contents are mainly death, ghosts, reasoning, bloody cases and ghosts, which have a strong horror color. What fascinates me most is the creation of the atmosphere, which is very scary, scary and nervous ... In fact, for Gothic literature, reading the tense and scary plot and feeling the strong "Gothic flavor" is more important than theory and ideology. However, Gothic literature was once neglected or even criticized, and it was not regarded as a formal literary genre until the late Victorian era.

In Gothic literature, Poe's works occupy a high position. Poe's works are mainly short stories, essays and poems, which are mysterious, scary and beautiful. His idea is "art for art's sake"-this is one of the ultimate goals of Gothic literature. If writing is compared to building a house, most writers pay attention to the practicality of the house and show their unique style in it, while Gothic writers headed by Edgar Allan Poe build a house just to show Gothic style and make people feel beautiful. In my opinion, this is not to say that Gothic works are superficial and have no literary value. Who stipulates that articles must tell people what truth and opinions? Giving people a good feeling can also be the purpose of writing.

Besides the reasoning, death and mystery that Poe often writes, many Gothic writers like to write stories about vampires, which makes vampires the most famous creatures in western legends. Powerful, beautiful, with great wisdom, immortal, noble and elegant as a nobleman, he is the ruler of a proud night. Although he is bloodthirsty, he often falls in love with human beings-this is the classic image of vampires. The most famous vampire novel is The Kiss of Drakula published by bram stoker in 1897. Since then, this book has been reflected in most vampire works. Why are vampires so popular with Gothic writers? First of all, vampires are legendary creatures, and they are amazing in themselves. Secondly, vampires feed on human blood, which symbolizes terror and death. Third, vampires always live in the dark, with beautiful appearance, elegant manners and strong power, which conforms to the dark, mysterious and decadent beauty pursued by Gothic style. Fourth, vampires live forever, have high IQ and are opposed to human beings, which gives writers great creative space. The plot of fighting vampires can be written with strong reasoning, and their love and hate with human beings can easily be written as tragedies. Together, these elements can be said that vampires are the "spokesmen" of Goth.

In addition, there is another kind of novels that can also be included in the category of Gothic literature, that is, a group of novels headed by Lolita, which mainly describe abnormal love, violence and sadness, and also have some pornographic flavor, and have been banned from publication.
