I'm not just a plant. In contemporary poetry, the most familiar work about "trees" is Shu Ting's To the Oak Tree. This is quite different from the image of trees in Shangchao Li's poems. In Shangchao Li's A Tree, the tree sits opposite the poet. The tree said to the poet, "It said: No/I'm not just a plant". Trees and poets are one of the things in nature. They are all creatures in the vast universe. People are not nobler than plants, and trees are not just "plants" in human definition. So what is a tree?

Shangchao Li, Li Bai and Tao Qian have something in common in their thoughts, and their poems all show a strong influence of Taoist philosophy.
In Taoist philosophy, man and nature are equal, harmonious and unified, man is "homogeneous", and nature including man is the result of "natural release". "Although the shin is short, the continuation is worrying; Although the crane's neck is long, it is sad to break. " Things have their own characteristics, each in its place, each in its place, arbitrary and natural.
Returning to Shangchao Li's A Tree, we find that the tree in the poet's eyes is "quiet", "generous", "it doesn't need to hide anything", "wise", "profound" and "escape without losing reason".
