Liu Ling is short and ugly, usually taciturn and doesn't like to associate with people. However, Liu Ling's temperament is bold and unconstrained, and Ruan Ji and Ji Kang get along very well. His main works are The Book of Jin and Ode to Sade. His literary style inherits the spirit of Jian 'an literature, which is quite strong in Jian 'an. However, due to the strict control of the Western Jin Dynasty at that time, his words used some rhetorical devices such as metaphors and symbols, which implicitly expressed his thoughts and feelings. Liu Ling's articles are vivid and humorous, and there is no trace of carving in depicting characters and landscapes, as if they were natural.
Liu Ling once joined the army under the Wang Rong shogunate to help Wang Rong manage shogunate affairs, but he was always disheveled and slovenly, so it was difficult to set an example in the army. Jin was an official in the early years, but because he was frank and didn't go with the flow, he always insisted on his own views on the policy issues of the court, emphasizing inaction, which was not allowed by the court. The people who joined him as officials in the DPRK have already occupied high positions and their careers have risen. Only he was excluded from North Korea. He can't display his political ambitions, and mental stress makes him depressed. In order to vent his depression, Liu Ling began to drown his sorrows in wine. After a long time, she became addicted to alcohol. She has a hangover all the year round, and her already poor appearance has become worse. Therefore, she will not appear in court until she dies.
