Why aesthetic experience is not utilitarian?

(A) perspective

Aesthetic activity is different from scientific and moral activities because it is a perceptual and intuitive activity. The so-called "perceptual intuition" means that in aesthetic activities, the subject deals with the object directly rather than indirectly by virtue of his own sensory organs rather than through abstract thinking, and the object is also presented to the subject with his own perceptual representation (that is, the explicit form that the senses can grasp and feel), thus establishing a perceptual intuition relationship between the subject and the object. The aesthetic experience formed and gained by the subject in aesthetic activities is therefore perceptual and intuitive. When we are engaged in art appreciation or aesthetic activities, we often get not only sensory pleasure, but also profound ideological enlightenment, and realize the meaning and value of life in the universe, which shows that aesthetic experience is also an indispensable intuitive activity.

Nonutilitarian

The reason why aesthetic experience is not utilitarian is determined by two factors. First of all, from the perspective of aesthetic object, because aesthetic experience has intuitive characteristics, it only involves the appearance and form of things, and has nothing to do with the actual existence of things, so naturally it will not have any interest with the object. Secondly, from the perspective of aesthetic subject, the basic function of aesthetic experience is to make people feel aesthetic pleasure, thus satisfying people's aesthetic needs, which requires people to eliminate the interference of various utilitarian factors, because the existence of these factors will inevitably damage or weaken people's aesthetic pleasure. However, when we say that aesthetic experience is a non-utilitarian behavior, it does not mean that aesthetic experience cannot produce any utilitarian effect. As far as aesthetic experience is concerned, it is undoubtedly non-utilitarian, but because aesthetic experience is a form of life practice in the final analysis, it will inevitably be related to other life experiences in real life activities, and it will inevitably be influenced by certain utilitarian colors in this process.

(3) Beyond

In daily language, the word "transcendence" means "self-improvement" and "self-progress", which means that people constantly improve their knowledge and ideological realm through study and hard work. In philosophical research, "transcendence" has a more complicated meaning. Transcendence includes two meanings: one refers to the transcendence from individual things to universal things, and the other refers to the transcendence from experiential things to transcendental things. In aesthetic research, when we talk about the transcendence of aesthetic experience, it includes not only the daily semantics of the word, but also its philosophical usage. Transcendence is mainly reflected in the following three aspects: first, aesthetic experience can achieve transcendence from the material world to the spiritual world. Secondly, aesthetic experience can also achieve transcendence from the real world to the ideal world. Finally, aesthetic experience can transcend from the empirical world to the transcendental world.
