Only in ancient Rome. I've never heard of it in ancient Greece.
The ancient Greeks and Romans were completely different, with completely different personalities and temperaments.
The ancient Greeks were men of letters, while the ancient Romans were rough soldiers.
The Greeks loved philosophy and liked to debate with people on the street. The Greeks loved drama and troubadours, and their amphitheater was not used to watch beast-fighting games, but to watch drama and poetry.
The Romans didn't like this. Relatively speaking, the Romans seemed very "uneducated".
The characteristics of the Romans are somewhat close to the Spartans among the many city-states of ancient Greece.
