Shanghai is located in Wudi, Jiangdong, and the local language is the ancient Wu dialect with a history of thousands of years. The word Wu dialect has been around since ancient times and is commonly used in ancient poetry and prose. It refers to the dialects in the Jiangdong area. Shanghai dialect is a type of Wu dialect and carries the flavor of ancient Jiangdong culture.
To discuss the origin of Shanghai dialect, we should first distinguish between the two concepts of "Shanghai dialect", because during the historical development of Shanghai, two "Shanghai dialects" were formed. One is the "Old Shanghai dialect" that has developed naturally over a long period of time in Shanghai and is consistent with the dialects currently spoken in the suburbs around Shanghai.
The other is the urban "New Shanghai dialect" formed with the rapid development and population migration of Shanghai after the opening of Shanghai as a port. The "Shanghai dialect" collectively referred to at home and abroad refers to the New Shanghai dialect. However, to trace the historical origins of Shanghainese dialect, we have to start with the history of Shanghai’s founding and the Shanghainese dialect before Shanghai opened as a port.
