Strange Tales from a Lonely Studio is a costume drama adapted from the famous novel Strange Tales from a Lonely Studio in Qing Dynasty, directed by Wu Jinyuan.
The series consists of six representative story units, namely, Painted Skin (starring, Jiang Hua), Xiaocui (starring, Li Bingbing), Crazy Bird (starring Justin), Judge Lu (starring, Huang Xiaoming and Huo Siyan).
The play premiered on the Pearl River Channel of Guangdong TV Station on February 9, 2005.
Strange Tales from a Lonely Studio is adapted from Pu Songling's work Liaozhai. Qiu Lixin, the producer of the play, said that compared with the old version, which is faithful to the original, the key of the new version is to let the audience know the truth by reading the story. Pu Songling wrote Strange Tales from a Lonely Studio in the hope of depicting the decline of human nature through bizarre and absurd plot stories, thus making people reflect. So is the conception of Strange Tales from a Lonely Studio. I hope that through the compact plot and relaxed and wise interpretation, the audience will not only be entertained, but also reflect on some forgotten moral values.
