Nie Luda was born in Palar, a small town in central Chile. His father José del Carmen Reyes Morales is a railway worker, and his mother Rosa Basoalto de Reyes is a primary school teacher.
Shortly after Nie Luda was born, his mother died of severe tuberculosis. At the age of two, Nie Luda moved to Temuco with his father, where his father married a lady (Candea Malvede). Nie Luda loved his stepmother very much, and many pages in his later poems were dedicated to her.

Nie Luda's life has two themes, one is politics and the other is love. His early collection of love poems, Twenty Love Songs and a Despair Song, is considered as one of his most famous works.
1930, Nie Luda married the Dutch Maria Antonita Haagner in Java. They have great differences in ideas. Nine years later, they divorced. After that, Nie Luda spent some time with a French girl.
1943, Nie Luda married his second wife, Argentine painter Delia del Carrier, and divorced in 1955. A few years later, Nie Luda met the love of his life, Chilean female singer mathilde urrutia (May 5th 19 12- 1 May 5th 1985).
1960, Nie Luda dedicated A Hundred Years of Love to urrutia. He thinks urrutia is the most similar to him. They are all children in Chile, and Uruguay is his love and inspiration. They got married on 1966 and lived happily after marriage.
