As far as the stars are concerned, each star has its own attributes and representatives. This may be a belief of the Chinese in all things in nature, but it is also a means of astronomical observation. We have to admire the wisdom of the ancients. In terms of the standard for dividing the sky, the Twenty-Eight Constellations and the Three Yuans (Taiweiyuan, Ziweiyuan, Tianshiyuan) are the yardsticks of this standard. This is consistent with the twelve constellations in the West. The two constellations are mostly humanistic.
Another main manifestation of the Four Gods in ancient China was in the military. During the Warring States Period, the marching formations had the saying "Suzaku in front and Xuanwu in the back, green dragon on the left and white tiger on the right". To put it simply, it is a It's just a layout diagram.
The Twenty-Eight Constellations first emerged in the Xia and Shang Dynasties, and were further developed in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. They are recorded in "Shang Shu" and "Zuo Shi Chun Qiu". The early twenty-eight star hosts were mainly used for observing astronomy and meteorology, which were of great help to agriculture at that time. They could also be used to divide the seasons at that time, which was used as the current calendar. The earliest record of the Western calendar is Ancient Babylonian period. We can take a look at the division of a week by the ancients from the following poem:
Four, five, six, one, two, three
Jiao Kang Di Fang Xin Wei Xuan
< p>Douwu Nuxu Dangerous Chamber WallKui Lou Wei Ang Bi Zui Ginseng
Well Ghost Liu Xing Zhang Yizhen
It can be seen from this that the so-called two The Eighteen Constellations are just the ancient calendar. There is my country's earliest astronomical observatory in Songshan Mountain, which was built in the early Yuan Dynasty. Guo Shoujing once re-observed the positions of the twenty-eight constellations and other stars here, and compiled the most advanced calendar at the time - the time calendar.
The rise of Taoism was a turning point in astrology. Taoism has a new explanation for the twenty-eight constellations. They believe that the twenty-eight stars are the gods that protect the four divine beasts, and the four gods are the gods that protect the four directions of heaven and earth. Hence the so-called Four Gods. They believe that the red bird represents the sky, so it is supreme; while the green dragon and white tiger are symbols of power and prestige. It also looks like a snake, but it can live for tens of thousands of years. From the current point of view, it is just a turtle, so Xuanwu represents longevity. Taoism also arranged many diagrams based on the directions of the four gods and twenty-eight constellations, such as the "Nine Bends of the Yellow River" and so on. Later, these evolved into Feng Shui.
The twenty-eight constellations are an important theoretical basis for the ancients to deduce the good and bad luck of the day and time.
The origin of the Twenty-eight Constellations is very early. Initially, they were twenty-eight groups of stars (or constellations) used by the ancients to observe the coordinates of the sun, moon, and five stars. The ancients believed that the positions of the stars relative to each other were constant, and they could be used as markers to illustrate the positions of the sun, moon, and five stars. After long-term observation, the ancients successively selected twenty-eight stars near the equator of the ecliptic as coordinates. Because they are surrounded by the sun, moon, and five stars, they are very similar to the places where the sun, moon, and five stars live, so they are called the Twenty-Eight Constellations. The ancients also divided the twenty-eight constellations into four palaces: east, south, west, and north, with seven constellations in each palace. Each palace imagined the seven constellations it belonged to as an animal image, thinking it was "the four spirits of the sky, rectifying the four directions." The seven constellations that the Canglong in the East Palace belongs to are: Jiao, Kang, Di, Fang, Xin, Wei, and Ji; the seven constellations that the Suzaku in the South Palace belongs to are: Well, Ghost, Willow, Star, Zhang, Yi, and Zhen; the seven constellations that the White Tiger in the West Palace belongs to are: Kui. , Lou, Wei, Ang, Bi, Xi, Shen; the seven constellations that Beigong Xuanwu (turtle and snake) belongs to are: Dou, Ox, Female, Xu, Danger, Room, and Wall.
The Twenty-Eight Constellations are not only the coordinates for observing the positions of the sun, the moon, and the five stars, but some of them are also the objects of observation for the ancients to determine the age and seasons. For example, when Rigel is due south during the first twilight, it is the first month of spring, and when Antares is due south, it is the fifth month of summer, and so on. The twenty-eight constellations surround the celestial body and move around in circles. They govern the four celestial phenomena in the east, west, south, and north respectively, dividing day and night, the alternation of cold and heat, and the changes in yin and yang. Over time, the twenty-eight constellations were given different meanings of good and bad luck to reflect the ups and downs of the folk world, and thus became another important theoretical basis for the ancients to choose the day and time.
Twenty-eight constellations are said not only in China, but also in ancient cultural countries such as ancient India and ancient Rome, but the names and meanings are different. The origin of the twenty-eight constellations taking turns to judge the good and bad is difficult to examine in detail. The almanac of the Southern Song Dynasty already adopted this method of keeping the day. Later, folk magicians added twenty-eight kinds of animals to further develop the good and bad connotations of the twenty-eight stars. There are very detailed records in the folk popular book "Zhiji Tongshu" about the matching of the twenty-eight constellations with the twenty-eight kinds of animals and the good and bad fortune of things. The relevant content expressed in the form of popular songs is appended here for reference.
