Kazakh traditional folk songs can be divided into labor songs, hymns, love songs, custom songs, etc. in terms of content.
Based on the characteristics of music, the Kazakhs divide their folk songs into two categories: "An" and "Yuelun". "An" means melody. This type of song has a beautiful melody and a wide range of sounds. Most of the songs have a beat of 24 or 34, and a single section is repeated with a chorus structure. People who are good at singing "An" are called "Anqi" - singers. The widely circulated "Mayila", "Beautiful Girl", "Swallow", etc. all belong to "An". "Yuelun" means poetry. It is often improvised and sung, with a more complex rhythm and a melody close to the intonation. People who are good at singing "Yue Lun" are called "Yue Lun Qi" - folk poets.
