3. Background

This poem was written in the winter of 768, the third year of living in Dali. At that time, Du Fu was 57 years old and was wandering around Hunan. When the country was in turmoil and the people were in great difficulties, his personal situation was extremely difficult. Plus, he's old, sick and depressed. Du Fu suffered a lot in his later years, but his poetry creation, especially his regular poems, became more and more mature. These five laws are one of the masterpieces of the poet's profound artistic attainments in his later years.
