Traditional Yuan Zaju usually adopts narrative poetry as the singing method, and presents the dramatic form through the description of the plot and the psychological description of the characters. But by the end of Yuan Dynasty, with the development and popularity of first-person narrative poems, Yuan Zaju gradually completed the transformation from narrative poems to first-person narrative poems. The first-person narrator's poetry began in the Southern Song Dynasty. Different from narrative poetry, it integrates approachable daily spoken language into poetry, which is closer to vernacular Chinese in form. The use of first-person narrator's poems was very common in the early Yuan Dynasty, and it became one of the main manifestations of Yuan Zaju in the late Yuan Dynasty.
The transformation of Yuan Zaju not only expanded the expressive means of Yuan Zaju and enhanced its artistic appeal, but also brought opera and folk culture closer to people's lives. The application of first-person narrative poems in Yuan Zaju realized the close combination of literature and drama and made important contributions to the development of Chinese drama history.
