The origin of antithesis is similar to that of poetry. He said in Textual Research on Poems of Past Dynasties: "(Wang Anshi) begins with a group of sentences, many of which have rhyme, all of which are in the same strain as the sentences of predecessors, and semantic duality is often more intimate than this poem."
Wang Anshi can be said to be a master of couplets, but couplets did not start from Wang Anshi. According to the Records of Liaohua Prefecture, couplets appeared as early as the early Song Dynasty.
The range of antithesis is very wide, but the most common is poetic antithesis, such as Rui Fang Dui by Li Shangyin in Qing Dynasty and Jiao Shan Xi Dui by Su Shi.
