Appreciation of Oxcart Works

This novel, published in 1936, is one of Xiao Hong's representative works, which indicates that Xiao Hong's novel art is "maturing day by day". Based on the viewpoint of "I", the novel describes an ox cart driving slowly in the country. Through the experience of Wuyun's sister-in-law and villagers' relatives being killed by warlords, it outlines a tragic picture of warlords fighting in northern China, the families of working people being ruined and their wives being separated, accuses warlords of their heinous crimes of ignoring human life, and implicitly points out the root of the tragedy of working people's lives. While whipping the darkness, the novel also reveals the spiritual beauty of the working people represented by Wu Yunsao, and shows their lofty feelings of caring for each other. This novel is ingenious and full of drama. Wu Yun's wife and coachman are both victims of warlords, and the ox cart has become the tangled point of the fate of two "Tianya reduced people". Although it is a coincidence, it does show inevitability in accident. The novel is full of lyrical atmosphere and emotional appeal, and tells a sad story with prose-like free brushwork, which is sad and penetrating and empty. In addition, the work has a strong sense of picture, just like a beautiful landscape painting.
