Luo Fanggui’s tribute to the heroes

After Luo Fanggui died for the country, the Nationalist Government decided to transport his remains back to his hometown. On April 15, 1938, Changsha's "Ta Kung Pao" carried the main headline in large characters: "The coffin of the famous Anti-Japanese War general Luo Fanggui has arrived in Han, and will be transported to Hunan for burial", and the subtitle "Guarding the south entrance, shocking both China and foreign countries; Taizhuang battle, sacrificing his life for the country". In early May 1938, Luo Fanggui’s coffin arrived at Hengshan Railway Station from the front. Hengshan County Magistrate Sun Fuyuan led people from all walks of life to greet him at the station. Immediately afterwards, a grand memorial service was held in Dapingli of the Confucian Temple in Hengshan County. In front of Luo Fanggui's soul, there are elegiac couplets and eulogies by important members of the Kuomintang and Communist parties, such as Chiang Kai-shek, Zhou Enlai, Lin Sen, Yu Youren, Tang Enbo, Jiang Guangnai, etc.

Chiang Kai-shek's elegiac couplet is impassioned: "He who is good at fighting has long been known, and his wings and demonic atmosphere destroy warriors; he can accept orders in times of danger, so that his heroic spirit can revive the soul of the army!"

Zhou Enlai's elegiac couplet is sincere: "For the country's cooperation in the anti-Japanese war, he fought to the death in the defense of Nankou, which was well-known at home and abroad; as a hero of national rejuvenation, he achieved a heroic victory in Taizhuang, unique for the ages!"

The elegy of Lin Sen, chairman of the National Government, was concise and comprehensive: "Wrapped up "Revolution completes loyalty".

At the memorial service attended by more than 1,000 people, many people sang an elegy for the martyrs: "The wind is rustling and the water is cold, and the brave men will never return once they are gone..." which added a tragic feeling to the venue. atmosphere, many people shed tears over the death of the famous anti-Japanese general.

Luo Fanggui’s wife, Kang Jingyi, had just given birth and was very weak and filled with great grief. She attended the memorial meeting holding the posthumous daughter Luo Benzhong, who was born only after 10 days of bloodshed on the battlefield. On the eve of leading his troops to defend the south entrance, Luo Fanggui mobilized his beloved wife to leave the army station and return to her hometown in Hengyang, and rushed to the anti-Japanese battlefield without hesitation. Unexpectedly, the couple would never be separated from each other. At the memorial meeting, Kang Jingyi told the story of the martyr's life with tears in his eyes, and felt proud that her husband had sacrificed his life for the country; he said that he would turn grief into strength and complete her husband's unfinished business. On December 26, 1938, Luo Fanggui's coffin was buried in the ancestral tomb of Yang Siqiao, Xintang Town, Hengdong County today.

In recognition of Luo Fangui's achievements, the Nationalist Government posthumously promoted him to Army Major General and enshrined him in the Nanyue Martyrs' Shrine.

After Luo Fangui died, his only daughter Luo Benzhong was raised by his wife Kang Jingyi. She has now retired from Xi'an Northwest Architectural Engineering College. While teaching at the university, Luo Benzhong traveled thousands of miles back to his hometown many times to visit his father's grave and pay homage to the Martyrs' Shrine.
