When he was young, Yu Guangzhong joked that he could write poetry with his right hand and prose with his left. He defined four dimensions of writing: poetry, prose, criticism and translation. For each item, he has his own love, just as he said: "Poetry is my wife, prose is my lover, and criticism and translation are business!"
Yu Guangzhong's poems have a heavy sense of self-reflection, which shows that he values life; Occasionally express your inner feelings in a playful way in choosing words and making sentences. Maybe life is always balanced. Early poetry combined traditional and modern, China and western brushwork. The subject matter is extensive, the style is constantly changing, and the skills are varied. Perhaps the years are getting longer and the recent works have some vicissitudes, but they have not made readers feel sad after reading them.
Yu Guangzhong's prose is often self-centered. It can be seen from many articles that his "feelings" are everywhere. From the enlightenment of childhood to his family scattered all over the world, the towns he has been to and the days of teaching, he has put his heart down. Often in his articles, he confides frankly to readers: the unforgettable memory, the human feelings, the reluctance and so on. Young and middle-aged works, such as Wandering, Shepherd Looking at Home, are full of charm and colorful, also known as "relics".
Yu Guangzhong's comments prove his attitude of never being careless and always following the rules. Because he asked his commentary to be based on experience, he wrote down what he saw, heard and felt, and used his feelings and understanding to make the topic of discussion have obvious classical reasoning or rich romantic images.
Yu Guangzhong's translated works are extremely rich. There are China's modern poems translated from Chinese into English, as well as British and American poems, novels and even plays translated into English. When he teaches translation, he often advocates translating the original meaning, not necessarily the original. This makes his translated works bear the meaning of faith and loyalty.
