The origin of the custom of earthen lamps

Legend has it that the custom of burning tile lamps originated from a ritual activity held by ancient kiln workers in order to pray for the blessing of porcelain gods to burn more porcelain and less waste porcelain. Today, it has become a folk activity for people to celebrate the bumper harvest of grain, look forward to the favorable weather in the coming year and express their pursuit of a happy life.

Burning tile lanterns is a traditional custom of Mid-Autumn Festival in yingtan. Every year, on the Mid-Autumn Festival on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, high earthen lamps are erected in urban and rural open spaces. The earthen lamp is based on big stones, and it is piled up layer by layer with broken stones picked up by children from the ground.

The earthen lamp was lit by the venerable old man in the village. Everyone in the village will add a handful of firewood to the earthen lamp, which is called "adding firewood (wealth)" Then pour oil and salt on the raging fire, and stop which fire head goes straight into the sky, up to several feet, which is called "prosperous wealth".
