3. Introduction to Ai Qing:
Ai Qing (March 27, 1910 - May 5, 1996) was a modern Chinese poet. His original name was Jiang Haicheng, and his pen names were Lin Bi, Ke'a, etc. A native of Jinhua, Zhejiang. Born in 1910 into a feudal family in Jiang Village, Fantian, Jinhua County, Zhejiang Province. In 1932, he joined the Chinese Left-wing Artists Alliance in Shanghai. In 1933, he published a long poem "Dayan River—My Nanny" for the first time under the pseudonym Ai Qing. With sincere feelings and fresh poetic style, he caused a sensation in the poetry world. In 1985, he won the highest medal of literature and art in France. This was the first highest-level foreign literary and art award for a Chinese poet. His poems "I Love This Land" and "Dayan River-My Nanny" were selected into the middle school Chinese textbooks published by the People's Education Press. "The North" was selected as a compulsory trilingual book in the Jiangsu Education Edition.
4. Creative background
His mother had a difficult delivery when he was born in 1910. The fortune teller said that he was "the fate of his parents" and he was sent to a poor farmer's home to be raised. At the age of 5, he went home to study. But he was treated coldly and was only allowed to call his parents uncle and aunt. As he said, he grew up in an atmosphere of indifference and discrimination. In 1932, the poet joined the "Chinese Left-Wing Artists Alliance". On July 12, Ai Qing and 12 other young people were arrested. The Kuomintang reactionaries accused these unarmed young people of "subverting the government" under the "Emergency Code of Crimes Endangering the Republic of China". Ai Qing was sentenced to six years in prison.
"Dayanhe—My Nanny" was written when the poet was in prison. When he saw the snowflakes flying in the sky, he thought of his nanny's snow-covered grave, and wrote this poem praising the working people and cursing the dark world.
