3. Translation
I miss you on this sad autumn night;
I walk alone and sing about the cool autumn.
You can hear the sound of pine nuts falling to the ground in the silence of the empty mountain.
I think you are also missing your friends and have trouble falling asleep.
4. Appreciation
This is a nostalgic poem. The poet and Qiu Dan had a close relationship when they were in Suzhou. When Qiu Dan came to Pingshan to study Taoism, the poet wrote this poem to express his gratitude. The first two lines of the poem describe the scene of me wandering and meditating because I am pregnant with someone on an autumn night; the last two lines imagine that the person I am pregnant with is also missing me at this time and is unable to fall asleep. The hermit often eats pine nuts, so when the pine nuts fall off season, he thinks of the other person. Same autumn colors, missing each other in a different place. Although the ink is light, the charm is endless; the language is shallow and affectionate, and the words are concise and meaningful. The whole poem, with its quaint and leisurely style, gives people endless artistic enjoyment.
