The Function of Numerals in Ancient Poetry

First, the influence of numeral expression function.

When numbers first appeared, they were mainly for counting, which made them accurate and intuitive. Only in this way can they really play a role. It is precisely because of this that some characters in poetry can often give readers an intuitive feeling. The poet mastered the accuracy of figures and used them.

Second, the comparative function of numerals.

Two Liangzhou Ci Poems, Part One, Tang Dynasty: Wang Zhihuan.

The Yellow River is getting farther and farther away, because it flows in the middle of the Yellow River, and Yumenguan is located on a lonely mountain.

Why use the elegy of willow to complain about the delay of spring, old Yumenguan, a spring breeze is not blowing!

Explanation:

The Yellow River seems to rush out from the white clouds, and Yumenguan is hanging alone in the mountains. Why do you want to use Qiangdi to play sad willow songs to complain that spring has not come? It turns out that the spring breeze around Yumenguan can't blow!

This is Wang Zhihuan's Liangzhou word. Through the description of the frontier fortress scenery, this poem reflects the hard life and homesickness of the soldiers guarding the frontier and expresses the author's deep sympathy for the soldiers. The two poems in the first couplet are about the Yellow River extending into the distant sky, and an isolated city is located in the mountains of Wan Ren, which strongly exaggerates the vast and sparse characteristics of the northwest frontier and sets off the sad mood of recruiting people to guard the frontier with the description of the scenery.

The lonely city among thousands of rocks and obstacles is decorated with "one", which is in sharp contrast with the "10 thousand" behind it, showing the loneliness and danger of the city and sketching a desolate and desolate scene.

Third, the crowning touch of numbers.

"Early Plum" Tang Dynasty: Miracle

Ten thousand mu can't stand the cold, and plum trees absorb the vitality of underground heating. Snow covered the village. Last night, flowers were in full bloom in the snow.

The breeze is blowing towards Mei, so it has no emotional appeal. Avon's clean posture makes the birds jumpy. If the plum blossom can blossom on time next year, I hope it can bloom on the spring terrace of people's love.

Explanation:

Ten thousand mu can't stand the cold and is about to be destroyed, but the plum tree is like a lonely underground heating in the root, and it has regained its vitality. Snow covered the countryside of the mountain village. Last night, Ao Shuang opened a plum blossom. The breeze is blowing with a faint fragrance, and Avon's pure posture makes the birds secretly greedy. If the plum blossom can bloom on time next year, I hope it will open to people's favorite spring platform first.

This is Miracle's five-character poem "Early Plum". Miracle once asked Zheng Gu about this poem. The second couplet of the poem was originally "Thousands of villages in Zita Law, how many branches opened last night." Zheng Gu looked at it and said, "It's not early to count, it's better to count one." Deeply admired by Miracle, he changed "several branches" to "one branch" and called Miracle "a word teacher".

Although this is a legend, it shows that the word "one branch" is a wonderful pen. The idea of this poem lies in "early": after a heavy snow, everything is covered with snow, and only a determined plum blossom bud is in full bloom. "One" doesn't mean much here, but it is "early" that stands out. "One branch opens" reminds people of "holding their heads high in full bloom", and the praise for the tenacious vitality of plum blossoms is self-evident.

The clever use of the word "one" accords with the idea of "early plum blossom" and plays a role in making the finishing point in the whole poem.

Fourth, the superposition of numerals.

The interaction between landscape and seclusion in Tang Dynasty: Li Bai

The two of us drank cup after cup in the blooming flowers on the mountain.

I want to sleep when I am drunk. You can leave yourself. If not, take the violin in the morning.

Explanation:

The two of us had a good time drinking one cup after another in the blooming mountain flowers. I am drunk and want to sleep. You can leave by yourself. If you haven't finished, come back with your piano in your arms tomorrow morning.

This is Li Bai's Dialogue with Friends in the Mountains. In the first sentence of the poem, it is written that "two people are drinking together", and the drinkers are "lovers" who are congenial to each other, so they drank "one cup after another" and repeated "one cup" three times in a row, which not only wrote a lot about drinking, but also wrote a lot about satisfaction.

Readers seem to see the scene of binge drinking and singing, and hear the cheerful voice of "don't stop drinking (definition: drink quickly, don't stop raising a glass)" ("drink"), so that the poet "I'm drunk, go to sleep (definition: I can leave on my own if I want to sleep)", a kind of arbitrary binge drinking.

Fifth, the harmonious function of numeral collocation.

Du fu: the quatrain of Tang dynasty

"Two orioles sing green willows, and egrets cover the sky."

My window framed the snow-covered western hills. My door often says "goodbye" to ships sailing eastward.

Explanation:

Two orioles sang among the green willows, and a line of egrets went straight into the blue sky. Sitting by the window, you can see the Millennium Snow in Xiling, and the Wan Li ship from Soochow is moored at the door.

In Du Fu's impromptu poem Jueju, "two" birds sing in pairs on the new green willow branches, presenting a pleasant scene. The First Line describes the natural and graceful flying posture of egrets in the background of "blue sky". Qian Qiu talks about snow for a long time. "Wan Li" says that there is a vast space for boat scenery, which gives readers endless associations.

This poem has a beautiful and harmonious artistic conception. The poet really understands Wan Li, thinks for thousands of years, and has a broad mind, which amazes readers.
