Chen Li/Translation
Always dreaming about graduation exams;
Two monkeys were chained together and sat on the windowsill.
The blue sky flows outside the window,
The sea splashed.
I'm taking an examination of human history:
I stammered and struggled.
A monkey stared at me and listened sarcastically.
The other one seems to be dozing off—
And when the question was asked, I was speechless.
He reminded me,
Accompanied by the soft jingle of the chain.
The characters in the poem are speechless when they examine human history, and the monkey uses the voice of the chain to prompt, which shows the human situation in the poet's concept.
When a poet stutters, he must be looking for knowledge in books, and these words and concepts are absurd and "ironic" to monkeys. The poet is also full of doubts, not confident, and guilty in front of two monkeys, so he pays attention to the monkey's "eyes staring at me and listening sarcastically".
Facing the "blue sky flowing outside the window, splashing sea water", the poet preparing for the graduation exam is next to the "two monkeys locked in chains" on the windowsill. Poets and monkeys are actually the same, and they are all locked up. The latter is locked by chains, and the former is locked by invisible chains represented by graduation exams, but monkeys understand it earlier.
