Laughing on the top of the mountain - Yaoshan Weiyan
Mazu Daoyi and Shitou Xiqian equally divided the Zen world at that time, ** *Together with students from all over the world. Yaoshan was originally a student of Shitou Xiqian. One day, Yaoshan asked Shitou Xiqian: "I still have a rough understanding of the teachings of the Three Vehicles and Twelve Points. I really don't know the purpose of Zen, which is to directly point to the human heart and become a Buddha by seeing one's nature." Please figure it out and ask Master to give me some guidance." Shitou Xiqian said, "This is not right, and it is not right if it is not this way. It is always wrong if it is not this way. What should you do?" Yaoshan was at a loss. Shitou Xiqian said: "Your destiny is not here, you should go to Master Ma." Yaoshan Weiyan accepted the master's order and respectfully went to worship Zen Master Mazu Daoyi. Those same questions. Mazu said: "Sometimes I teach it to raise its eyebrows and blink, and sometimes I don't teach it to raise its eyebrows and blink. Sometimes it is it that raises its eyebrows and blinks, and sometimes it is not it that raises its eyebrows. How do you understand it?" Yaoshan suddenly understood after hearing this, and asked Mazu worship. Mazu said: "What truth have you seen that made you bow and give thanks?" Yaoshan Weiyan said: "When I was with Master Shitou Xiqian, I was like a mosquito biting an iron cow, unable to get through." Mazu said: "Since I understand it this way "
One day, when Yaoshan Weiyan was meditating, Zen Master Shitou asked, "What are you doing here?" Weiyan replied, "Nothing." Shitou said, "That's just sitting around." Weiyan said, "If you just sit around, you're doing something." Shitou asked again, "What are you not doing when you say you're not doing anything?" "Thousands of sages don't know."
Once, Zen Master Weiyan was sitting in meditation. The monk asked him: "Master, why are you sitting there thinking about it?" Jie Di asked: "How can you think if you don't think?" Weiyan said: "It's not thinking." One evening, Zen Master Weiyan was walking on the mountain. Suddenly the clouds and mists dispersed, and the moon appeared. The Zen Master couldn't help himself. The ground burst out laughing. The laughter could be heard more than ten miles away. Someone came to ask the next morning, and the monks said: "The monk laughed on the top of the mountain last night."
Hearing about this, Li Ao, the governor, composed a poem for Yaoshan Weiyan:
Choose to live in seclusion and enjoy the wild life, with no farewell or welcome all year round.
Sometimes I go straight to the top of the solitary peak, and the clouds roar under the moon.
