Appreciation of Yang Jiong in Military Service

Appreciation:

This poem borrows the old Yuefu title "Joining the army" and describes the whole process of a scholar joining the army and fighting. Only forty words not only reveal the psychological activities of the characters, but also render the environment and atmosphere, and the brushwork is extremely vigorous.

The news that the first couplet was written while reporting aroused the patriotic enthusiasm of people with lofty ideals. The poet did not directly explain the military emergency, but said that "the bonfire shines in Xijing" and showed the military emergency through the visual scenery of "bonfire". A word "photo" plays up the tension. "Self-injustice in my heart" is caused by the bonfire. Every man is responsible for the rise and fall of the country, and he doesn't want to spend his youth between pens and inkstones any more.

The word "zi" shows the scholar's sincere patriotic passion and writes the spiritual realm of the characters. The first two sentences explain the background of the whole event. Zhuan Lian wrote about the process that the commander-in-chief led his troops to bid farewell to the capital and went to the front to fight, and surrounded the enemy castle with an avalanche. A word "ci" shows the seriousness of the expedition;

The word "around" clearly shows that the fighters are powerful and surround the enemy soldiers. Longcheng is a famous city of Xiongnu, which refers to the enemy fortress here. The neckline is closely connected with the couplet, and the poet grasps the main appearances of nature "snow" and "wind" in the middle of winter, depicting the tense scene when the two armies confront each other. Vision: The flag is dancing everywhere in the heavy snow;

hearing: the roar of the wind is mixed with the sound of marching drums. Two poems, vivid and colorful, are wonderful. The poet has a unique way to express himself, symbolizing the "flag" and "drum" of the army, showing the brave and fearless spirit of the soldiers who fought against the enemy in the snow and the tragic and fierce scene of bravely killing the enemy under the encouragement of the sound of drums.

The couplet "Better to be a centurion than a scholar" expresses the common aspiration of intellectuals in the early Tang Dynasty to make contributions to the country. Li Zehou said, "At that time, from the noble gate to the humble scholar, from the upper level to the common people, in the Tiankhan (Taizong) era of the early Tang Dynasty, which was characterized by the expedition to the west, the great defeat of the Turks, the defeat and the return of peace, a sense of honor and heroism for making contributions to the country permeated the social atmosphere."

Yang Jiong's two poems were the strongest words of the literati class at that time, which had the characteristics of the times. The same spirit is reflected in Yang Jiong's other poems. This short poem tells the whole process of the scholar's joining the army and going to war. The ability to condense such rich content in a limited space shows the poet's artistic skill.

First of all, the poet grasped the most representative fragments in the whole process and made a general description. As for how the scholar joined the army, how he bid farewell to his parents and wives, and how he marched along the way, the poet omitted to write. Secondly, the poem adopts a leaping structure, jumping from one typical scene to another, and developing forward by leaps and bounds.

As soon as the third sentence is written, the fourth sentence has surrounded the enemy, and then it shows the scene of fierce fighting. However, this kind of jumping is very natural, and there is a rich room for imagination between each span.

At the same time, this leaping structure makes poetry have a lively rhythm, such as the turbulent flow on a cliff, giving people an indomitable momentum, which strongly highlights the scholar's strong patriotic passion and the spirit of Tang Jun soldiers.

Original text of "Joining the Army":

Tang Dynasty: Yang Jiong

The bonfire shines on Xijing, and my heart is full of grievances.

tooth Zhang said phoenix que, and iron rode around Longcheng.

flags are painted in the dark snow, and the wind is noisy with drums.

it is better to be a centurion than a scholar.

The warning beacon of the frontier fortress has reached Chang 'an, so how can the hearts of strong men be calm? After bidding farewell to the palace, the general left with a military symbol in his hand; Surrounding the enemy and attacking the city, the elite cavalry are extremely brave. Heavy snow, the flag is eclipsed; The wind roared, mixed with drumming drums. I'd rather be a junior officer to fight for my country than a white-faced scholar who can only carve sentences and find chapters.

Creation background:

In 679-681 (during the period of Tiaolu and Yonglong in Tang Gaozong), Tubo and Turkic invaded Gansu area many times, and Pei Xingjian was ordered to set out to make a crusade. In The Interpretation of Tang Poems, Tang Ruxun thought that the author saw that the imperial court valued martial arts over literature, and only the military attache was in favor, so he felt aggrieved and pretended to be a poet to vent his grievances.
