The Battle of the Java Sea took place from February 14 to March 15, 1942. During World War II, the Japanese army fought to occupy Java Island. On January 11, the Japanese army launched peripheral operations and successively captured South Sumatra, British Borneo (now Kalimantan), Celebes (now Sulawesi) and other islands. On March 1, various units of the Japanese 16th Group Army landed at three locations on Java Island. Under the cover of superior sea and air forces, they advanced rapidly and captured Batavia on the 5th, Surabaya on the 8th, and Surabaya on the 9th. Bandung, Allied forces surrender. During the battle, the Japanese suffered approximately 10,000 casualties, captured more than 80,000 Allied troops, and captured 177 aircraft.
