Hu Shi received nine years of private education in Jixi, Anhui Province. 1910-1917 went to study in the United States from Shanghai, and first entered Cornell University, then abandoned agricultural literature. 19 15 transferred to Columbia university graduate school to study philosophy with Dewey. These years in America are very crucial periods in his life. First of all, Dewey's pragmatism became the basis for Hu Shi's thought to absorb his theoretical proposition. Therefore, Hu Shi put forward his famous slogan-"Make bold assumptions and be careful to verify".
In addition, he also discussed the issue of literary improvement with Mei Guangdi, Ren Hongjuan, Yang Xingfo, etc., and completed the critical work of literary revolution-My humble opinion on literary improvement, which was sent to Chen Duxiu in China and published in the fifth volume of New Youth.
