Hu Shi received nine years of private education in Jixi, Anhui Province. 1910-1917 went to study in the United States from Shanghai, and first entered Cornell University, then abandoned agricultural literature. 19 15 transferred to Columbia university graduate school to study philosophy with Dewey.
