Gao Pian (pián) (821-September 24, 887 [1] ), with the courtesy name Qianli. A native of Youzhou (now southwest of Beijing). His ancestral home is Bohai County (now Jingxian County, Hebei Province). His ancestors were the famous "Bohai Gao family" in Shandong. A poet, famous general and military strategist in the late Tang Dynasty, he was the grandson of Gao Chongwen, Prince of Nanping County.
Gao Pian was born into a family of Imperial Guardsmen. He served as the Marquis of Yu, the capital of Shence Army, the Governor of Qinzhou, and the Protector of Annan. In the sixth year of Xiantong (865), Gao Pian led his army to defeat the Fengzhou barbarians. The following year, he marched to recapture Jiaozhi and served as the first military governor of Jinghai Navy. Later, he successively served as the governor of five towns including Tianping, Xichuan, Jingnan, Zhenhai and Huainan. During this period, he severely damaged the Huangchao uprising army many times. He was appointed by Emperor Xizong of the Tang Dynasty as the commander of the military and horse forces of all Daoxing camps and was granted the title of King of Bohai County. Because general Zhang Lin was killed in battle, he did not dare to go to war and took strict precautions to protect himself. As a result, Huang Chao successfully crossed the river and the two capitals were lost. Later, the military power was reduced.
After Huang Chao was pacified, Gao Pian regretted that he had not made any achievements and became increasingly depressed. In his later years, he was fond of playing tricks, almost to the point of madness. He reused the sorcerers Lu Yongzhi, Zhang Shouyi and others, which caused the upper and lower to be separated. In the third year of Guangqi's reign (887), he was imprisoned and killed by his general Bi Shiduo.
He is good at poetry and has meritorious deeds, which is called "elegant and wonderful". As a warrior and good at literature, he was known as the "Luodiao Shiyu"[2]. "Complete Poems of the Tang Dynasty" is a volume of poems.
