Sending Jian Xiucai to Lintao
Tang Dynasty: Gao Shi
I am disappointed to see that the sun has traveled thousands of miles away, but how can I still have two cents today?
You still want to go to Yanggu, but don’t hate the high Longshan Mountain.
Relying on a horse to see a powerful pen, carrying only a precious sword.
It is expected that you will do your best in the end, and your merits will be in Lintao.
Translation:
I have been disappointed for a long time, but now I have white hair on my head. I still want to go to Yanggu, but Longshan is too high. You can see paper and pen when leaning on your horse, and you only carry a sword with you. It is expected that you will eventually reach a high position and make great achievements in Lintao.
Lintao: Lintao County, located in the southwest of Lintan County, Gansu Province. At that time, it had become an important border town and was under the jurisdiction of Longyou Jiedushi.
Yanggu: Place name, in the north of Chunhua, Gansu Province.
This poem was written in the autumn of the eleventh year of Tianbao (752 years). Probably Jian Xiucai was similar to Gao Shi in that he had been a subordinate for a long time and wanted to fight for fame on the battlefield. The whole poem encourages Jian Xiucai to move forward bravely without revealing any sadness about separation.
Gao Shi (700-765), a poet of the Tang Dynasty. His courtesy name was Dafu, and his alias was Zhongwu. He was a native of Bohai (now Jingxian County, Hebei Province). He was frustrated in his early career. Later, he traveled to Hexi.
