Many of Mr. Jin's expositions about Yuan Zhen are biased, so I stand up and criticize them. I am convinced that academic debate and friendship are not contradictory. Jin Tingjiang: I don't object to the rock climbing festival, because "climbing every year makes everyone progress" is our common aspiration. However, I am opposed to the theory of "commemorating Yuan Zhen". In my opinion on the origin of Yuan Jiu's ascension to heaven, I listed four reasons, and it is those reasons that angered you and triggered this "contention of a hundred schools of thought". Do you really recognize Yuan Zhen's political character? Is he really worthy of our worship? Long Ke: When people criticize Yuan Zhen, they are always entangled in his personality. There are two main charges: ingratitude and fawning on eunuchs. During his tenure, he rectified the bureaucracy and carried out preferential policies, doing countless good things for the people, and Shi Kejian was no exception. Jin Tingjiang: But during his tenure as Sima in Tongzhou, he had no political achievements, and the poems he wrote during this period were also hateful. Since he doesn't love Tongzhou, how can we respect his totem? Long Ke: He wrote 180 poems in Tongzhou, and none of them really praised Baqu. But this just shows that he is honest and not hypocritical. Unlike many literati, he didn't whitewash the peace, but reflected the real situation at that time in a realistic way, which reflected the literary accomplishment of a great poet, which was really admirable. Jin Tingjiang: Even so, his poetry writing only belongs to his own hobby, and has not left the purpose of history for generations, let alone create a style of writing in Tongzhou. The glory of Bashan writers today has nothing to do with him. Why do you owe the prosperity of Baqu culture to him far-fetched? Long Ke: Yuan Zhen was quite famous in the literary world at that time. When he comes to Tongzhou, a large number of fans will inevitably learn from him or sing, and the influence on Baqu culture can be imagined. The continuation of culture is like the fruit of dandelion. Wherever it flies, it will take root and sprout. Jin Tingjiang: The achievements of poetry can't cover up his political inaction. For Tongzhou, he has no political achievements. As a Sima with no real power, it is also difficult to achieve "the love of one's life and many achievements." Long Ke: Although Yuan Zhen took the post of Sima, he was "a cadre sent by the central authorities" after all. The local governor will definitely give him three points, and will solicit and listen to his opinions on many things and let him participate in the discussion of state affairs. Many historical data show that he supervised the harvest of agriculture, prayed for the well-being of the people, and created a harmonious official management in Tongzhou. Especially in only seven months after taking over the secretariat, "the minutes should be simplified, and the farmers should be rewarded and punished, the city should not be bullied and the officials should not invade." "It has greatly changed the scattered and backward appearance of Tongzhou. Jin Tingjiang: It is impossible to "greatly change the scattered and backward face of Tongzhou" in just seven months. Long Ke: Under the premise of assisting the government to lay a certain foundation in the first three years, seven months' finishing touch can completely realize transformation. Jin Tingjiang: Your explanation of Yuan Zhen's political character makes me more acceptable. Next, discuss the second controversial point: whether Gayun Pavilion was built for rock climbing. If it was built for climbing mountains, then this folk custom already existed at that time, and the "theory of commemorating Yuan Zhen" was broken. Long Ke: The records in the county annals of the Republic of China are very detailed. This pavilion was built to suppress the colorful clouds on the mountain that are considered ominous, and obviously has nothing to do with mountaineering. Jin Tingjiang: According to general legend, colorful clouds are auspicious signs, and immortals walk in the clouds. People should think that this is a fairy mountain. How to build a pavilion to suppress it? It is not necessarily true that the county annals are so recorded. Long Ke: How people explain natural phenomena depends on the level of understanding and the situation at that time. Zhang San may be lucky to see the colorful clouds, and Li Si may be unlucky to see the same colorful clouds. Zhang San called it Xiangyun, while Li Si did the opposite. Jin Tingjiang: I still doubt the authenticity and accuracy of the historical materials recorded in County Records of the Republic of China, but until I read more reliable information, I agree with you for the time being. Long Ke: This is just like saying that there is no historical evidence to prove that Yuan Jiu's ascent has anything to do with Yuan Zhen. It can only be based on the relevant expressions in the existing historical materials. Strictly speaking, Li Bingru's and Liu Cunhou's poems can't be conclusive evidence to commemorate Yuan Zhen's theory, but only these barely convincing written records can be found at present. In addition, Yuan Zhen ranks ninth at home and is called Yuan Jiu, so we regard it as a coincidence with the day of Yuan Jiu, and interpret "Yuan Jiu Ascending the Mountain" with the theory of commemorating Yuan Zhen. In addition, there are no absolute allusions to the origin of all traditional festivals, and most of them take folklore. It is not unreasonable for us to regard the theory of commemorating Yuan Zhen as a beautiful legend.
