Cycas are not uncommon. Cycas can often be seen in some office halls, doorways and yards. But it is difficult for cycads to blossom, especially in the north, as the saying goes, "Cycads bloom in a thousand years." I have always thought that the flowering of Cycas is a miracle and a great thing.
I went to Guizhou a few days ago. When I saw a row of Cycas blooming at the entrance of Fan Jingshan, I was very surprised and very rare.
Cycas leaves grow at the top of the stem, clustered inward like feathers, holding blooming golden flowers in the middle. It's a flower, but it's different from ordinary flowers. It gives me the feeling that at close range, it looks like a big and tall pine cone standing in the middle, and at a distance, it looks like several golden corn standing there, with flowers arranged neatly one by one.
I remember seeing cycads blossom in Miao village. The difference is that there was only one flower I saw before, standing straight in the center like a sentry.
Cycas, alias Cycas, is evergreen all the year round and has great ornamental value. Whether it blooms or not depends on the temperature, because the hometown of Cycas is in the tropics. If the temperature is not right, it will not bloom. If the temperature is right, old trees can blossom every year. No wonder Cycas in the north seldom bloom.
There are two kinds of flowers of Cycas: female flowers and male flowers, and the shapes of flowers are very different: the male flowers are like the cylinder in the picture above, like a big corn; I have never seen a female flower. It is said to be flat and round, like a large olive vegetable wrapped in layers. Flowers are like phoenix tails. When mature, there are red fruits in it, which are as beautiful and gorgeous as bird eggs and have the nickname of "Phoenix Eggs".
There are many explanations about the origin of the name cycad. One is that Cycas are heavy, the other is that the stems are hard, and the third is that Cycas like iron. One of the fancy words of Cycas is "faithfulness and unyielding", which is related to a story.
According to legend, there was a golden phoenix in the ancient south, with bright feathers and charming singing and dancing, which was deeply loved by the people. When the landlord knew about it, he sent someone to arrest golden phoenix and put him in a narrow cage. Feed it delicious food every day, entice golden phoenix to unfold his feathers and sing and dance for it, but golden phoenix never gave in, and the landlord burned golden phoenix to death in a rage. Later, in the place where golden phoenix died, a tree with the same tail as a phoenix grew, with hard stems and leaves. People thought it was the soul incarnation of golden phoenix, so they named it Cycas.
Cycas also has a flower that says, "Long life, wealth and good luck", because Cycas is the longest-lived plant in the world, and the longest one is said to have survived in Oceania for about1.20 thousand to1.50 thousand years. The oldest cycad in China is located in Sichuan and Fujian provinces, and it is said that it has a history of 1000 years. ?
Cycas are not suitable for flowering, but the way Cycas bloom is poetic. In the Song Dynasty, there was a poem written by this buddhist nun, which said, "Flowing water goes down the mountain unintentionally, and clouds go to the cave unintentionally. Life is like a cloud, and iron trees bloom all over the world. "
