The gadfly in Voynich, Ireland

British young Arthur is studying in an Italian university. His parents died, and his two half-brothers controlled the property, so they were cold to him, and his elder sister Julia regarded him as a thorn in his side. The only people who can give him care and comfort are his childhood friend Joan Ma and Father Montpellini who loves him like a son.

Father Montpellini, dean of Pisa Theological Seminary in Italy, is an old friend of Arthur's family. He is knowledgeable and noble, and Arthur respects and trusts him very much. On a sultry summer night, Arthur told Montpellini that he wanted to join the secret group "Young Italy" established in the university, resist Austrian rule and liberate Italy II. Aware of the danger, Montpellini was very worried and persuaded Arthur to go to the Alps with him to collect specimens in order to find opportunities to persuade Arthur to change his plan. However, although they had a pleasant holiday, Montpellini's wish did not come true.

Soon Montpellini was appointed Bishop of Apennines by the Catholic Church, which meant that he would leave Arthur and his new father, Caldi, could not be trusted. For fear of Arthur's safety, Montpellini was unwilling to leave. He wanted Arthur to keep himself, but Arthur didn't understand his good intentions and advised him to take office, so he had to leave anxiously.

Joan Ma and Arthur studied in the same university, and she was also an active advocate of "Young Italy", so she gradually had more and more contacts with Paula, one of the leaders of this group. This made Arthur jealous. He was deceived by Father Caldi in his confession, told some activities of the Italian Youth Party, and also told Paula's name. Soon, he and Paula were arrested by Austrian military police. In prison, Arthur endured all kinds of torture, refused to confess, and finally got out of prison under the intervention of his brother. When he learned from the jailer that Cuddy had betrayed him, his mind was greatly stimulated and he became suspicious of hypocritical religion. Joan Ma, who came to welcome him out of prison, mistakenly thought Arthur had betrayed his comrades-in-arms, slapped him in the face and left angrily.

Hardly had Arthur got home when he suffered another heavy blow. His sister-in-law who tried to drive him out of the house told him a long-hidden secret: Arthur is the illegitimate child of her mother and Montpellini! The news came as a bolt from the blue and shattered all Arthur's good memories of the world and religion. He smashed the statue of Jesus at home, left a suicide note, and finally hid on a ship bound for South America and went to Brazil.

13 later, in order to buy people's hearts, the newly acceded pope issued an Amnesty order for political prisoners, and the liberal craze swept through Italy. Arthur, who has been wandering in South America for several years, has gone through hardships, and great changes have taken place in both appearance and appearance. Only by liberating Italy in his heart did his belief against the church remain unchanged. During his stay in France, he changed his name to Wa ·NVC, took "Gadfly" as his pen name, and used pen and ink as a weapon to continue his struggle with reactionary forces. At this time, he returned to Italy at the invitation of several Italian celebrities and wrote satirical articles for them. On an accidental occasion, Joan saw him, and her mood was hard to calm down. Because from him, she seemed to see the shadow of young lover Arthur.

Joan Ma was deeply shocked when she saw Arthur's suicide note, thinking that she had hurt Arthur and could not forgive herself for a long time. Now, she longed for the gadfly to be Arthur, and tried again and again, but the gadfly felt the pain of the past and refused to admit it.

The gadfly's satirical articles are sharp and even vicious, showing no mercy to the enemy. The new cardinal Montpellini won the favor of many people with his humble manners and blameless virtues, but the gadfly still attacked him mercilessly, which made many people unable to understand.

The gadfly doesn't want to just talk on paper. He organized an uprising while writing. Ah, preparing for the uprising, he went to the Apennine mountain area to smuggle arms and was discovered by spies. He could have escaped in the gunfight, but he was arrested at the moment of hesitation because of the sudden appearance of Montpellini. The gadfly met Montpellini in prison, recognized him, and gave him a choice: either leave the church to fight against himself, or continue to be a faithful servant of the church and watch himself die. Montpellini couldn't convince the gadfly. After some painful thinking, he finally chose the latter.

The gadfly's indomitable spirit touched the prison guards, who volunteered to bring a letter to Joan Ma. In the letter, the gadfly finally forgave Qiongma, admitted that she was Arthur, and expressed her eternal love to him. After the gadfly died heroically, the pain of losing his son and deep regret destroyed Montpellini's will. After giving a crazy speech at Easter, he died in a melancholy mood.
